Ron and Charlotte started a musical relationship over 14 years ago.
Firstly collaborating in songwriting and then working as a duo on the local (Norfolk) covers scene. The duo was first called “Midnight” and was a very new project for both Ron and Charlotte. Ron had only ever performed in bands before and for Charlotte it was her first ever taste of singing live.
The success of this first act was amazing and was a sign of things to come. They continued writing original material and put together a 4-piece band “Spider Murphy” to record with in London after small deals were discussed with independent labels. However the record companies ideas on how to move forward were quite different from the bands and so it was decided that they stay in Norfolk entertaining their local crowds in pubs and clubs in a way that they were happy with.

The duo also soon became known as “Spider Murphy” and Charlotte decided to expand on the band and make it a 7-piece with brass section. The band specialised in soul and R’n’B and again was received with open arms on the local circuit.During this 14 year span the various acts have had brilliant write ups and reviews by local newspapers as well as some national ones in NME and Melody Maker and also Guitarist magazine.
They have performed live on local radio and been on radio chat sessions. The band won a local battle of the band competition and won vouchers to be spent at a local music shop. Spider Murphy were inaugural winners in “The Talk” talent show back in ’97 winning studio time as well as a cash prize.

A lot of these competitions were won due to Charlotte and Ron’s original compositions as they have continued to write music covering all styles. Back in ’00 they won another competition to support Pete Best the original drummer with the Beatles. Yet the biggest claim to fame has to be Charlotte and Rons’ independent entries to The Guitarist of the Year competition. Both of them entered into separate categories – Ron in the Electric Guitarist of the Year category and Charlotte in the Acoustic Guitarist of the Year category. They were amazed to discover that they were both selected to play at the finals held at Wembley during the National Music Show Exhibition. Ron went on to win the title of National Guitarist of the Year and a very tasty custom shop Fender Stratocaster into the bargain. The following day Charlotte went on to become the inaugural winner in the acoustic category receiving a Washburn acoustic as her prize. This was an amazing time for the couple a great time to meet new contacts in the business. Due to the uniqueness of a couple getting to this level they were invited back the following year to perform together on the live music stage.

It has been an eventful 14 years and it looks as though the next 14 will no doubt follow suit, although their attention has been concentrated in other areas of late as Ron and Charlotte now have two wonderful yet highly spirited offspring in Jasmine Beth and Jadon Nile.
The original writing is still very much in progress and they are working toward selling CD’s of these songs locally and via the Internet.
The Spider Murphy duo has burst back on the circuit entertaining audiences, and Ron is continuing his solo act ‘Purple Ronnie and the
now very popular three-piece “The Ron Sayer Band”.

The Future

As well as aiming to take all their projects onwards and upwards Ron and Charlotte are always open to new ideas. Both are keen to dep for other acts, to do session work and consider offers of interesting musical scenarios.
Due to the great interest the pair have had in their original songs this is definitely something which will be pursued and perhaps, well, who knows what will happen next. Having experienced (as celebrity guests) the glory of the Ivor Novello awards the couple surely have a taste for bigger things – Watch this space.
